What Do Dental Crowns & Bridges Do?

Specially made dental crowns and bridges are two of the most common tooth restoration and replacement options. Each plays a distinct role in preserving your biting and chewing abilities, but they’re also intended to provide aesthetic benefits that improve the appearance of your smile. Dental crowns and dental bridges are both restorative dental treatments used to repair damaged or missing teeth.

Full-Coverage Dental Crowns

Dental Crowns | Kyle & Austin TX
Crowns (also known as “caps”) cover your complete tooth up to the gumline. They are protective restorations that reduce the likelihood of further decay, breakage, and erosion of the tooth beneath. They’re durable enough for everyday use so that you don’t have to do anything differently. We’ll make your crown out of a strong ceramic or Emax/zirconia material that matches the teeth around it. Our materials are hand-picked based on which tooth is being restored for aesthetics and maximum durability.

Do I Need a Crown?

When a tooth is too compromised to repair with a filling, a crown is required for structural integrity purposes. It would only be a matter of time before a large filling broke down or cracked in a structurally-vulnerable tooth. Our Kyle dentists will most likely recommend a crown in situations involving:
  • Large cavities or cracks
  • Fractured or severely worn-down teeth
  • Following root canal therapy
  • Replacing large, old metal fillings

Fixed Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are not the same as dental crowns. Although each end of this multi-tooth restoration is essentially a crown, the primary purpose of a bridge is to fill the space created by a missing tooth. Bridges are an extended restoration that support pontic (false) crowns between two functional crowns, filling the open area of your missing or extracted tooth.A bridge protects your bite alignment, enhances smile aesthetics, and allows you to chew normally (instead of shifting to the other side of your mouth.) Bridges, like crowns, are typically made of ceramic, zirconia, or porcelain materials that are extremely strong. The typical treatment process usually requires two separate visits, spaced a few weeks apart.

Caring For Your Crown or Bridge

Although crowns and bridges protect your teeth, there is still a narrow margin around the edges where tooth structure is exposed, or plaque can accumulate. It is critical to thoroughly clean these surfaces every day to avoid the development of new decay or gum disease. Floss around your restoration carefully every day. Use a floss threader to weave the thread underneath bridges. Tightly wrap the floss around the side of each tooth, then slide it up and down several times, allowing the floss to slip under the gums. Water flossing is an easier alternative if flossing is difficult. Simply trace the tooth with the stream of water along the gums, pausing between teeth to flush away plaque. Water flossing makes cleaning around and under bridges a piece of cake.
