What Are Dentures?

Do you need a quick solution to replace your missing teeth? In the case of extensive tooth loss, dentures are a tried and true answer for restoring your smile. Depending on your specific needs, our Kyle dentists offer a variety of denture design options.

Dentures can be used to replace a few teeth here and there or all of your teeth at once. Their design is tailored to the individual in order for them to look and feel their best. Plus, the denture materials’ durability allows them to last for several years. If you don’t want (or meet the criteria for) a dental implant or bridge, you might want to consider dentures. During your evaluation, we can go over the benefits and drawbacks of each as they relate to your specific needs. We want you to be comfortable with whatever decision you make regarding your smile restoration.

What to Expect

The first step in getting dentures is to take digital scans or impressions of your mouth. These molds are used to create foundation models of your oral anatomy. Then you’ll come back to our office to try on the base to ensure it’s a perfect fit. The base is then returned to our lab, along with instructions on the color and shape of the teeth you’ve selected. When it’s finished, you’ll come back to our office for the last try-on and any last-minute changes.

Adjusting to Your New Dentures

Anyone who is getting a new denture should give themselves plenty of time to adjust. Most people adapt to their new prosthesis in a couple of weeks after some practice talking in the mirror and chewing different textures of foods. Partial dentures, on the other hand, where only a few teeth are replaced, are typically much easier to get used to.

The Benefits of Dentures

Dentures are oral appliances designed to replace multiple missing teeth or a full arch of teeth. They are removable prosthetic devices that are custom-made to fit your mouth and restore the appearance and functionality of your teeth and smile. Here’s what dentures can do:

  • Replace Missing Teeth: Dentures help restore the aesthetics of your smile, allowing you to regain your self-confidence and feel more comfortable in social situations.
  • Improve Chewing and Speaking: Dentures provide a functional biting surface, allowing you to chew a variety of foods and maintain a balanced diet.
  • Support Facial Structure: Dentures help fill out the face, providing support to the lips and cheeks, and restoring a more youthful facial contour.
  • Enhance Oral Health: Dentures not only replace missing teeth but also contribute to better oral health.
  • Provide Convenience and Flexibility: Dentures are removable, allowing you to easily clean them and maintain good oral hygiene.

Types Of Dentures

There are several types of dentures available, and the most appropriate type for you will depend on your specific needs, oral health condition, and preferences. Here are the types of dentures we offer:

Full Dentures

Full dentures, also known as “plates,” replace all of the teeth in your upper or lower arch at the same time. They are used when all of your natural teeth are missing from your jaw. A precise fit is required because the customized prosthesis will sit directly against your gum tissues.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures replace multiple teeth at the same time while allowing you to keep your remaining natural teeth. A partial wraps around your existing teeth, filling in the gaps and spaces left by missing ones. Partials can be made with a metal or acrylic base, depending on your needs.

Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant dentures are implant-retained dentures that are attached to dental implants. Sometimes they’re called “overdentures”. Under the base of the denture, there are 2-4 specific locators that “snap” or “clip” onto a corresponding dental implant within your mouth. Your denture is still removable, but it is secured to implants during the day for added comfort and security.
